What are the advantages/disadvantages of buying a wide snowboard?

I am a beginner snowboarder. I wear a 10 1/2 boot. I plan on buying a snowboard, and a pair of Large bindings. I mostly like to free ride with a little-bit of freestyling down the mountain. I am 5′ 10”, 200 lbs. I plan on buying a 158-160 snowboard. Should I look for a wide board? Why or why not?

People use to say it was like riding a door down the slopes, You have longer edge to edge initiation time. Really if you don’t need a wide theirs no point in getting one. With size 10 1/2 you would be fine on a board in the 25.0 waist widths.

With a 10 1/2 boot, I would not recommend a wide snowboard. You only really need a wide board if your boot size is 12 or bigger. That being said, I have a friend that has size 15 boots and rides a normal board, but has binding risers to prevent toe drag. If your board isn’t wide enough, you can buy risers at just about any snowboard shop, but if you get a wide board and don’t need it, it can make it extremely difficult to get up on your edge.
No, with your boot size, I would not buy a wide board, it would only hold you back. I would say your ideal waist width is about 250-252mm.

Since you are a beginner, I would recommend that you buy a regular width board. Wide boards are harder to turn and are only made so that people with long feet don’t drag their toes or heels in the snow when they make turns. Your feet aren’t too long for a regular board, so unless you are a hound for the fresshhhyyyyy pow-pow, stick with a board that is easier to ride and do tricks on the mountain.
